National Reconciliation Week - Talking Points

  • Reconciliation week is held from the May 27th – June 3rd.
  • These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
  • National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
  • Reconciliation week promotes and facilitates respect, trust and positive relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Acknowledging the history of Indigenous Australia, pre and post colonisation is essential to our reconciliation journey.
  • Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move toward creating a more inclusive and unified nation.
  • This is an opportunity for us all to commit to changes and actions within our circle of influence to turn around the disadvantage experienced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples today.
